Andy Murray (3) made a perfect start to his French Open campaign with a 6-3 6-3 6-1 win over Facundo Arguello, ranked 137 in the world from Argentina in an 1 hour and 44 minutes to extend his winning streak this season to 11 victories on clay including his first two titles on this surface in Munich and Madrid. by Diego Sampaolo
Murray cruised to 3-0 lead in the opening set but Arguello drew level to 3-all. Murray reeled off the next three games to clinch the 1st set. Murray got the break for 3-2 in the 2nd set and broke again in the 9th game to take the set 6-3. In the 3rd set, Murray was in the zone as he broke Arguello twice to take it and the match 6-3 6-3 6-1.
Tomas Berdych (4) beat Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0 7-5 6-3 to claim his 10th win on clay this year. The Czech player has enjoyed a good season this year in which he reached at least the quarterfinals in all the tournaments he has contested. Berdych will face his compatriot Radek Stepanek who fought back from a set down to edge Ivan Dodig with 5-7 6-3 6-4 6-1.
Teymuraz Gabashvili upset Feliciano Lopez (11) with 6-3 7-6(9) 6-3. Fabio Fognini (28) converted 6 of his 10 break points in his 6-3 6-2 6-2 win over Tatsuma Ito. 20-year-old 2015 Australian Open quarterfinalist Nick Kyrgios (29) fended off 11 break points to beat Denis Istomin 6-3 6-4 6-3 after 1 hour and 38 minutes. Dominic Thiem followed up his first ATP title in Nice with a 6-3 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 over Aljaz Bedene.
Tommy Robredo (18) fought back from a set down to overcome Andrey Golubev with 3-6 6-1 7-5 6-3 setting up a second round against Borna Coric who edged Sam Querrey with 7-6 (10-8) 6-3 0-6 6-3. Bernard Tomic (27) edged this year’s Sao Paulo finalist Luca Vanni from Italy with 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4 to get through to the second round where he will face his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis who rallied from a set down to beat Nicholoz Basiliashvili with 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.
Gael Monfils (13) recovered from losing the second set at the tie-break to edge his compatriot Edowuard Roger Vasselin 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 7-5. Monfils hit 68 winners. In another all-French match, Gilles Simon (12) fought back from a set down to edge Lucas Pouille 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4. David Goffin (17) also recovered from a set down to beta Filip Krajnovic 3-6 6-2 7-6 (7-3) 6-1.
