BMW Open in Munich: Murray qualifies for his first career clay final

Andy Murray has reached his first final on clay at the BMW Open in Munich with a 6-4 6-4 win over Roberto Bautista Agut after beating Lukas Rosol with 4-6 6-3 6-2 in the quarter finals earlier in the dayThe quarter final programme was postponed because of heavy rain on Friday and the matches were postponed on Saturday morning at 10 local time

Murray had to fight back from a set down to edge Lukas Rosol with 4-6 6-3 6-2. Murray took an early 4-1 lead with an early break of serve in the fourth game. Murray earned a point for 5-1 but Rosol turned around the set reeling off five consecutive games to win the first set on his fourth opportunity. Murray bounced back breaking five times on whis way to victory.

Murray broke serve in the fourth game of the second set before racing to a 4-1 lead. He  held all his service games and clinched the second set.

The Scotsman did not look back and reeled off 12 of his next 15 to clinch the win after two hours.. Murray got a double break in the decider to take a 3-0 lead before pulling away to 5-1. Rosol recovered one of the two breaks but Murray broke again to seal the win on his first match point

Murray hit five aces and converted on five of his 14 break point chances.

Bautista Agut also recovered from a set down to beat 34-year-old Victor Estrella Burgos 4-6 6-0 6-0.

In the semifinal Murray recovered from a 0-3 deficit with two consecutive breaks of serve en route to a 6-4 win in the first set. Murray got his third break at the start of the second set and went on to clinch the win with another 6-4 after 1 hour and 34 minutes  Murray hit nine aces and fended off five of the six break points he faced in the semifinal

Murray has reached his 48th career final but his first on clay. It will be his first final under the guidance of his new coach Jonas Bjorkmann.

The heavy rain which washed out the quarter finals on Friday forced Murray to play three matches on Saturday. After qualifying for his first clay final Murray also played the doubles semifinal with Jean Julien Rojer against Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares.

Phillip Kohlschreiber, who won the Munich title twice in 2007 and 2012, came back from one set deficit to overcome David Goffin in the quarter final with 2-6 6-3 6-4 Kohlschreiber converted on three of his seven break point chances and hit six aces.

Kohlschreiber set up a semifinal against Gerald Melzer (the younger brother of Jurgen Melzer) who battled past Dominic Thiem 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 6-3. Thiem went up a break in the first set before taking a 4-1 lead in the tie-break but Kohlschreiber recovered to win the tie-break with 7-5. Thiem won the second set forcing the match to the third set but Melzer raced to 5-1 in the decider. Thiem won two consecutive games for 5-3 but Melzer closed out 6-3.

In the semifinal Kohlschreiber rallied past Melzer with 2-6 6-1 6-4 to set up the final against Murray

ATP 250 Estoril:

Australian number seven seed Nick Kyrgios, who turned 20 last Monday, fought back from a set down to battle past Pablo Carreno Busta with 5-7 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 in just less than two hours to reach his first career final.

Kirgyos will take on Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the final. Gasquet rallied past Guillermo Garcia Lopez in three sets with 3-6 6-2 7-6 (7-1) after two hours and 16 minutes. It will be a re-match of last year’s second round clash at Wimbledon where Kyrgios prevailed after saving nine match points. After dropping the first set Gasquet won five consecutive games from 0-1 in the second set en route to winning it with 6-2. Garcia Lopez rallied from 3-5 0-30 and broke back to draw level to 5-5. Gasquet recovered from 5-6 0-30 to force the match to the decisive tie-break.

Gasquet qualified for his 24th final. He won 11 titles in his career and one in 2015 in Montpellier
