USA’s dim possibilities of qualifying for the next round of the Davis Cup were exterminated immediately as Andy Murray never let big serving John Isner get into the rubber.
Murray did have to work hard for the first set, serving three set points, but the once the Scot got momentum going and dented the tall American’s confidence, which was already severely hampered heading into the match after letting his side down against James Ward, there was no looking back and Great Britain were well on their way to a quarter final meeting with France, after a 7-6 6-3 7-6 win which rapped up a phenomenal week for British tennis in Glasgow.
“It feels great. This is a team effort and I think everyone agrees the team played their part. On behalf of all the players I want to thank the crowd because it’s been one of the most special atmospheres I’ve ever played in”, mentioned a delighted Murray.
Ahead of the tie against France, set to be played just a week after Wimbledon, the Scot added: “I would imagine we’d try to play that on a grass court possibly. I don’t know how many grass courts they have here in Glasgow but if they can lay one, I’d really love to play here again”.
