David Goffin beat Jerzy Janowicz 6-4 6-2 in the Open 13 Indoor Tournament in Marseille to set up a very interesting second-round match against Austrian Dominic Thiem who beat Joao Sousa from Portugal 7-6 6-4 on the ninth match point. Goffin converted on the first break point on set point of the match in the tenth game to clinch the first set with 6-4 before cruising to 6-2 in the second set.
French Gilles Simon was leading 7-5 2-0 when his compatriot Pierre Hugues Herbert withdrew. Simon will take on Croatian rising star Borna Coric.
Gael Monfils advanced to the quarter finals after his 6-3 6-2 win over Andrey Kuznetsov. The French star, who beat Alexander Zverev 6-1 7-6 in the first round, will face either Milos Raonic or Simone Bolelli who won the all-Italian match against Sao Paulo finalist Luca Vanni with 6-4 7-6 (7-4). Bolelli broke serve in the fifth game of the first set at 2-2. Bolelli faced the only trouble at 5-4 15-30 but he won the game with his first serve. Vanni saved a break point in the first set of the second set. Bolelli did not face a break point in the whole match and won the second set at the tie-break.
Sergiy Stakhovsky overcame Jan Lennard Stuff 6-4 4-6 6-3.
