Rafa Nadal made his debut with a 6-4 6-0 win over Facundo Arguello to set up a quarter final against Federico Delbonis from Argentina who beat Italian Paolo Lorenzi 6-4 6-2. Nadal converted on his five of his six break point chances and drooped serve only once.
Fabio Fognini, who beat Nadal last week in the semifinal in Rio de Janeiro, was upset by Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq who dropped just three games for a 6-3 6-0 win. Berlocq broke serve in the opening game of the match Fognini broke back in the fourth game. Berlocq broke again in seventh game to go down 3-5. Fognini was broken every time he was on serve and suffered a bagel defeat in the second set.
Pablo Cuevas, who won the third title of his career in Sao Paulo, has reached his third quarter final in a row with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 over Guido Andreozzi. Cuevas will take on 2007 Buenos Aires champion and six-time quarter finalist Juan Monaco who fended off six of the seven break points he faced to beat Leonardo Mayer in a all-Argentine clash with 6-4 6-4.
