Monica Puig upset Rio Open winner Sara Errani 6-1 6-1 scoring her second win over the Italian player two years after beating her 6-3 6-2 in the first round at Wimbledon. Caroline Garcia beat Melanie Matthek Sands 6-2 6-3. Timea Bacsinszky defeated Lesia Tsurenko 6-2 7-6.

Sharapova’s boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov was knocked out as defending champion by Ryan Harrison who claimed a three-set win with 7-5 4-6 6-0. Harrison converted on four of his nine break point opportunities to clinch an upset win after one hour and 49 minutes. Harrison will face Ivo Karlovic who rallied from a set down to beat Dusan Lajovic 3-6 6-3 6-1.
Kei Nishikori cruised to a 6-1 6-3 win over Yen Hsun Lu with five breaks. The 2014 US Open champion will take on Aleksander Dolgopolov who beat Andreas Haider Maurer 6-2 6-3. Kevin Anderson fought off four of six break points she faced in his 3-6 7-5 6-3 win over Steve Johnson. David Ferrer, winner this year in Doha and Rio de Janeiro, overcame Marinko Matosevic with 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 to set up a quarter final against Bernard Tomic who recovered from a set down to defeat Benjamin Becker with 4-6 6-3 6-2
