The Bryan Brothers finally won their long-awaited 100th title as a team, defeating Spanish duo Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez in the US Open final to clinch the title for a record-tying fifth time.
The top ranked twins made light work of the Spaniards, breaking them once in each set to win with a comfortable 6-3 6-4 in 1h20m.
The Bryans have now won a record 16 Grand Slam titles, the most of any men’s doubles team. The win also means they have now won at least one Slam a year for the last 10 years. “It’s always sweet winning a Grand Slam,” Mike said. “This just adds some extra whipped cream and cherries and nuts on top”.
Grand Slam achieved
Jordanne Whiley and Yui Kamiji won the women’s wheelchair doubles at the 2014 US Open to complete the Grand Slam in 2014, becoming the third women’s team to achieve such a result in the category.
The Anglo-Japanese pair defeated defending champions Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot 6-4 3-6 6-3 in a final that was interrupted by rain when Whiley and Kamiji where leading 4-3 in the deciding set.
The 22 year old become the first British player to complete a Grand Slam in tennis history. “I can’t believe it. There’s a mixture of emotions. I felt sick at one point, I felt enjoyment at another; Now it’s a little bit of relief and pure happiness. I think it will sink in later when I can relax and celebrate with the people that I love. I need to call my parents because they don’t know yet” Whiley said after the match.
