In the night match Tsonga could not convert two match points at 6-4 and 8-7 in the tie-break of the third set against World Number 142 Michal Przysiezny who fought back from a set down to edge the Frenchman in a very tight match with 4-6 7-5 7-6 (11-9). Tsonga was affected by a wrist problem at the start of the third set.
Local favourite Tatsuma Ito, World Number 103 produced a major upset when he defeated this year’Australian Open champion and top-seed Stan Wawrinka with 7-5 6-2 scoring his first ever win against a top-5 player. The Lausanne player lost his first match against a player outside the top-100 since his defeat against Nicholas Mahut at S’Hertogenbosch in 2013. Ito got two breaks at 1-1 and 5-5 to clinch the first set with 7-5 before taking the second set with 6-2.
Giles Simon fended off five match points at 5-6 in the second set and one at 6-7 in the tie-break before Roberto Bautista Agut withdrew during the fourth game of the third set when he was 1-2 down. Simon advanced to the next round with 4-6 7-6 (9-7) 2-1.
Milos Raonic, who finished runner-up i Tokyo in 2012 and 2013, overcame Bernard Tomic 7-6 (7-3) 6-3.
