The Dane started strong in the first set, but suffered Petkovic’s comeback before finally finding a six games streak to end the first set and take the lead in the second.
Whereas the first set appeared to be determined more by the German’s errors, the second was a great display from the former world number one, who after the match gave a lovely plea for the charity she is supporting by running the New York marathon in November.
Wozniacki started the match on the front foot, being a break up from the very beginning, but the German number two reacted with some good aggressive tennis to save several break points for the Dane’s double lead.
The 10th seed found the right combination of game and attitude to stop her opponent’s reaction and, from 3-3, close the set with another break.
The Dane then picked up from where she left and won three more games to start the second set.
Petkovic looked very annoyed on court due to the great amount of unforced errors that she produced in the attempt of breaking the terrific defence of her opponent.
The German ended the streak of games lost, but she could not take any chance to break Wozniacki’s serve and in the end she got broken once again to give the match to the Dane.
Wozniacki will play the winner of the night match between Maria Sharapova and Sabine Lisicki, coming to the match strong of a very solid win over this year’s Roland Garros semifinalist and the knowledge that her tennis seemed to have improved match after match.
