Djokovic was always in control of the first set where he cruised until his service game at 4-0 when Schwartzmann earned his first break point at 30-40. Djokovic saved the break point chance with a service winner. Two points later in the fifth game the Serb hit his backhand into the net to drop serve. Djokovic wrapped up the first set in 26 minutes.

The 2011 US Open champion started the second set with eighth points in a row before breaking serve to pull away to a 4-1 lead. He hit an ace to wrap up the second set after 57 minutes.

Djokovic went up a break at 3-2 in the third set but he made a double fault on break point and dropped serve in the next game for 3-3.

Djokovic broke back to love in the following game to take the 4-3 before wrapping up the match with a forehand winner.

The World Number 1 star played a solid match dispelling any doubts following his disappointing US hard-court campaign where he lost in third round matches to Jo Wilfred Tsonga in Toronto and to Tommy Robredo in Cincinnati following his triumph at Wimbledon and his wedding with Jelena.

Djokovic is bidding to reach the final at Flushing Meadows for the fifth consecutive year and win his second title at the US Open and his eighth Grand Slam of his career.

“The last three weeks in Toronto and Cincinnati were a bit tough emotionally for me. I wasn’t able to feel comfortable on the court. But now it’s different. I feel emotionally recharged and ready to go”, said Djokovic.

He will take on Frenchman Paul Henry Mathieu who battled past Gilles Muller from Luxembourg in five sets with 6-7 (7-9) 7-5 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (5-7) 6-1. Djokovic won five of his six matches against the Frenchman
