TENNIS – Jo Wilfred Tsonga beat Grigor Dimitrov in the first semifinal of the Rogers Cup to reach his first Master 1000 final since Paris Bercy 2011 where he lost against Federer. Jo Wilfred Tsonga has followed up his dream wins over Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray with another top-ten player Grigor Dimitrov.
The Frenchman played his third semifinal in four appearances in the Rogers Cup.
Tsonga was again very solid on serve one day after firing a 237 km/s ace in the quarter final against Murray. He hit seven aces and won 88% of her first serve points.
The Frenchman fended off four break point chances as he was serving for the first set at 5-4 before closing out with 6-4. He broke to love in the third game to take a 2-1 lead and got a second break in the eighth game to pull away to 5-3 before wrapping up the match with 6-3 in 84 minutes. Dimitrov could not reproduce the same form of Friday’s quarter final match against Kevin Anderson in which he saved two match points.
Tsonga is the second French player to reach the final in Toronto after Richard Gasquet who finished runner-up twice in 2006 and 2012.
