Tomorrow morning will be fine. Buy the papers and revel in the glory one last time of an epic Wimbledon final. Then the vacuum will engulf me. At 5 pm I’ll have to think about doing washing, not sit down to watch a 5 set thriller, or cheer for my favorite hopeful.
I always know this day is coming, after all I have been watching Wimbledon for nearly thirty years, but the Monday after Wimbledon is always marked by a sense of emptiness. Even when I was at school, Wimbledon so quickly formed part of my daily routine that it left a void when it was over.
For the last two weeks the TV has been on pretty much constantly – 14 days of unadulterated tennis watching. So decadent.
It’s not just the exciting matches that make Wimbledon so magical; it’s all that surrounds it. The iconic purple and green color scheme, the buzz of Wimbledon village as shops and restaurants are filled with people and windows decorated with tennis paraphernalia, the continuous stream of excited spectators marching up the hill, even the sponsors that haven’t changed for decades. In fact I can’t imagine the umpire’s chair without a bottle of Robinsons squash placed neatly on it, even though I have never ever actually seen anyone open one on court. But tomorrow all that is The Championships Wimbledon will be packed away again.
And thanks to the schedulers we’ll have to wait an extra week this time, as the 2015 championships are starting later to give players a bigger break after the French open. So here we go; the 358 day countdown begins.
