TENNIS ATP Queen’s – After a solid clay campaign closed in a disastrous first round exit at Roland Garros, Grigor Dimitrov is aiming high for Wimbledon. From London, Giulio Gasparin
The Bulgarian champion, who recently reached his career best ranking at world number 12, started his preparation on grass with a very good win over James Ward at the ATP AEGON Championships.
In the press conference that followed, he was not only positive, but determined and by no mean scared to reveal his goals.
“I mean, my approach, I’d say my goal is to become a member at Wimbledon the easiest way possible,” he said.
Then he added with a laugh: “That is to win seven matches.”
But he was serious, as he later explained: “I do believe that’s possible, but I think first everything step by step.
“I’m here at Queen’s right now focusing on the matches. All I have is just positive vibes every time I’m out here, and I think in England in general I feel quite comfortable.”
During his match, he had a special observer on the balcony of the club’s house: his girlfriend and, above all, fresh French Open champion Maria Sharapova.
She is already a member at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, is that a reason for him to want to join the club?
“Well, it’s just history, who doesn’t want to be part of history?” he said: “At the end of the day, I have played juniors out there, I won the Wimbledon juniors, so of course it’s a dream for me to win the real thing. Why not?”
