Eight days after former World No.1 Mats Wilander announced that he will start coaching American talent Madison Keys, the Swede has found himself flying back home.
It is unclear as to why the partnership has ended so abruptly. Wilander has a wide range of coaching experience after previously working with Marat Safin, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Tatiana Golovin.
“We have completed our cooperation and I am on my way home”. Wilander said, according to Challenge – Arnesen utmanar.
The Sweded appeared enthusiastic about working with the American. During an interview with Aftonbladet.se last week, Wilander discussed areas of Keys’ game that he would like to work on, including her top spin and the use of her serve.
“I want to get Madison to get some more top spin in her forehand than what she has now”. The former world No.1 said last week.
“With her technique and strength, she can widen the track more than the other girls can. It is not about hitting aces, but about knowing how to use the serve to set up the score”. He later added.
The mysterious ending of the partnership comes as Keys enjoy an impressive run in the Miami Open. In the third round of the tournament she defeated Roberta Vinci to grab her first win over a top-10 player for over a year. Following up her win with a straight sets victory over Irina Begu, Keys will play world No.2 Angelique Kerber in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Neither Keys or Wilander have commented on the reason behind the ending of their partnership, which lasted six days less than the duration of the Miami Open.
